Neither of us had been to Madeira before and expected it to be similar to the Canary Islands which are only about 300 miles south.

We couldn’t have been more wrong…

Madeira is a very lush island with a lot of vegetation and rugged volcanic peaks. Some areas have a distinct tropical rain forest look to them, others an almost “Lost World”  aspect.

We  both enjoy walking and spent a lot of our time (and energy) walking along some of the magnificent paths and trails.

One of our favourites and the most exhausting was Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo – and back. This walk gave us spectacular views over the island – we were lucky enough that there was no cloud for most of the day.
